Carers Rights Day takes place on Thursday 21st November. It’s a national event when unpaid carers are encouraged to learn about their rights, and everybody works towards ensuring carers get all the support they need.

Marking Carers Rights Day, Action for Carers Surrey (ACS) are running Carer Information Fairs, focusing on rights, at locations across Surrey.

Attending with ACS staff, are a variety of statutory services, local charities and other partners, all there to offer unpaid carers advice, information and support. There are also free refreshments for carers, plus some ‘give-aways’.

Fairs take place on Monday, in Cranleigh and Woking; Tuesday in Godalming; Wednesday in Ashford, Camberley and Epsom; Thursday in Farnham; Friday in Merstham and Leatherhead; and Saturday in Guildford. All are on between 11am and 2pm. See all the details here https://www.actionforcarers.org.uk/news/fairs-for-surreys-carers-marking-carers-rights-day-2024/

These events are all drop-in, so carers should feel free simply to pop along.

Quote on rights

“Carers’ Rights Day highlights the importance of all carers, at whatever stage of their caring journey, knowing and understanding their rights.

“Unpaid carers have a variety of rights including the right to be identified as a carer; the right to a Carer’s Assessment; the right to request flexible working; and (a new right in 2024) the right to a week’s time off work for caring.

“Carers do a huge amount, and are often under great pressures—affecting their own health and wellbeing. Knowing their rights and being able to access the support they’re entitled to is so important. Attending our Carers Information Fairs will help carers understand what’s available.“

Rachel Brennan, Manager Adult Carers Service, Action for Carers Surrey

  • At least six million people in the UK are currently unpaid carers
  • In Surrey there are likely at least 115,000 carers (10% of our 1.2 million population)

  • Carers save the economy £132 billion per year, an average of £19,336 per carer.
  • Five million people juggle care with work, however, the significant demands of caring mean that 2 in 5 carers are forced to give up work altogether.
  • Carer’s Allowance is the main carer’s benefit and is £81.90 weekly for a minimum of 35 hours, equivalent to £2.34 per hour – far short of the national minimum wage of £11.44 per hour.

  • 625,000 people suffer mental and physical ill health as a direct consequence of the stress and physical demands of caring.
